Police arrested a San Jose man on suspicion of child molestation following an investigation based partly on statements from the female victim who is now 19.
Morgan Hill Police Special Operations arrested Wallace Carmalt, 47, July 20 at his apartment on Foxchase Drive in San Jose, according to Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.
Carmalt sexually abused the victim multiple times while they were living together in Morgan Hill, while the victim was between 8 and 13 years old, Neumayer said. The victim first reported the abuse to police July 10.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office charged Carmalt with five felony counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child younger than 14, according to D.A. office spokeswoman Amy Cornell.
Carmalt was booked into Santa Clara County Jail after his arrest. He remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail, Cornell said.
His plea hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the South County Courthouse. Carmalt is represented by the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office.
Carmalt was a “friend of the family” of the victim, Neumayer added.
