A Pennsylvania man was arrested in Morgan Hill following a fight with his girlfriend at a nearby campground in which he suffered a bite to his ear, according to authorities.
A Henry Coe State Park ranger responded to the park’s campground east of Morgan Hill about 11 p.m. Saturday after hearing a report that a couple was fighting. When the ranger arrived the suspect had already left in a Volkswagen, according to State Parks Superintendent Eddie Guaracha.
The ranger put out an alert for the man, and Morgan Hill Police caught up with him about 11:50 p.m. at the Safeway grocery store at 840 East Dunne Ave. Police detained the man, who was inside the store, and turned him over to state parks authorities.
Guaracha said the 24-year-old suspect’s name was not yet cleared for release due to the pending nature of the investigation, but said he was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail for battery and domestic violence.
Before he could be booked, the suspect required medical treatment for a bite wound to his ear. Guaracha said the woman bit the man during the altercation. He did not know how bad the injury was, but said the jail refused to book him until he was cleared by a physician.
The woman received injuries in the fight, but refused medical assistance. Guaracha said the initial investigation determined that the man was the aggressor.
The couple was either visiting or had just moved to California from Pennsylvania. They were in California for about two weeks when the incident happened, Guaracha said.
