Shane Currier basically jumped into the lion’s den.

Bent on not paying $12 to enter the Garlic Festival, Currier successfully hopped a fence covered in blue tarpaulin Saturday. He wasn’t expecting what was waiting for him on the other side: a crowded police compound.

“It was during one of our briefings, so there were a lot of cops in the compound,” Sgt. Jim Gillio said. “(Currier) tried to run and hide but there was no where for him to go.”

Police arrested Currier, 23, for public intoxication.

The police compound was located near the festival’s Miller Avenue entrance and was surrounded by chain link fence that ran ran parallel to Uvas Creek down past the vendors on the ranch side. A blue tarpaulin covering the chain-linked fence, making the otherwise transparent divide opaque.
