A 61-year-old Monterey man died and a 41-year-old Gilroy man was injured Friday afternoon when the car he was driving plowed into a California Highway Patrol vehicle parked along the northbound side road of U.S. 101 just a mile north of the Coyote Creek Golf Drive exit.

The identity of the man has not yet been released.

According to CHP, the man, who was driving a Cadillac, apparently lost control due to the rain and wet roads and rear-ended the parked CHP cruiser, which was driven by CHP officer Steve Parra.

The Cadillac’s left front side struck the rear of the patrol car.

Two passengers, a 49-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, both residents of Anchorage, Ala., were taken by ambulance to San Jose Regional Medical Center for complaint of pain. Their injuries were listed as minor.

Parra, 41, of Gilroy, was also taken by ambulance to San Jose Regional Medical Center where he was treated for a laceration to his head and later released.

A 51-year-old Middletown woman who was involved in the prior accident was also injured. She was in Parra’s control car waiting for a tow truck to arrive. She was taken by ambulance to San Jose Regional Medical Center with a complaint of pain.

The driver of the Cadillac had to be extricated from the car by emergency personnel.

All were wearing seatbelts, according to the CHP report. Although the accident is still under investigation, it is not believed to be DUI-related.
