A man accused of stabbing his roommate below the eye pleaded guilty Thursday to an assault with a deadly weapon charge, a county district attorney spokeswoman said.

Julio Hernandez, 27, was arrested Sept. 25 in Morgan Hill on charges that he stabbed his roommate below the eye during a fight, police said.

The fight occurred on West Fourth Street about 1 a.m. Sept. 25. Hernandez and victim Carlos Medina, 24, had both been drinking but Medina was not drunk, Cmdr. David Swing said.

“They were arguing over a lady friend that they were both trying to date,” Swing said.

Medina was transported to the hospital while Hernandez had fled the scene on foot and was found hiding behind trash cans, Swing said. He was arrested without incident.

Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Amy Cornell said Hernandez is scheduled for sentencing at 9 a.m. Jan. 4.
