GILROY – A man trying to cross a busy First Street intersection was hit by a vehicle Wednesday night near the Togo’s sandwich shop, 1331 First. St.
The 43-year-old Gilroy man, whose name is being withheld by police because he is an accident victim, was taken by ambulance to Saint Louise Regional Hospital where he was flown by helicopter to a trauma center in San Jose.
Gilroy Police Department Capt. Debbie Moore said the victim’s injuries are in the leg area and are not life threatening.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured, Moore said.
The accident happened at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday night when the man tried to cross from the south side of First Street in the Mama Mia’s parking lot to the north side of the street just west of Togo’s. The man was struck by a vehicle driving westbound on First Street in the right-hand lane adjacent to the north sidewalk.
Moore said it is not likely the vehicle’s driver will be ticketed. There is no crosswalk in the area.
Gilroy Fire Department firefighter Roy Shackel said he believes the pedestrian was crossing alone. He said some witnesses were present.
The car’s windshield broke upon impact, sending glass into the passenger area, Shackel said.
Wednesday’s accident took place less than a half mile west of a fatal accident in January where a pedestrian crossing First Street was killed by a vehicle.
