GILROY—The driver in the wreck that killed four Gilroyans May 12 was arrested Thursday and charged with manslaughter and felony driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Anthony Imbronone III, 23, was arrested at his Gilroy home at 8:47 a.m. after a warrant was issued for his arrest, CHP Officer Herb Kellogg said in a statement.
In addition to felony driving under the influence, he was charged with four counts of felony vehicular manslaughter in connection the deaths of the passengers in his car. The DUI charge could mean Imbronone was allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both.
The Gilroy man was driving a Ford Mustang at 10:30 p.m. May 12, eastbound on Leavesley Road, when his vehicle failed to negotiate a sharp curve and veered off the road and down an embankment, killing all four passengers on impact. Imbronone was the only survivor.
Three of the victims were Gilroy high school girls, all 18 and set to graduate in June. The fourth was a 24-year-old Gilroy man and father of a baby girl.
Yesenia Mendoza Pina and Yolanda Jimenez, seniors at Mt. Madonna Continuation High School, Sara Jean Williams, a Christopher High School senior, and Joseph Vasquez Flemate were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Imbronone was booked in Santa Clara County Jail at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Kellogg said. His bail is set at $250,000.
No court date has been set, Kellogg added.
