Dear Editor:

I am not one to “write a letter to the editor.” However, when I read the letter from Martha Rivas I could not help myself.

It is clear from Ms. Rivas‚ letter that she knows nothing about Al Pinheiro or this community. It is sad that she would write the words she did about someone she does not even know.

If she did know Al, whether she agreed with his views or not, she would know that not only does Al know the definitions of honesty, integrity and commitment, he defines those words and lives his life every day by them. Al not only lives by those words, but, he is the most generous, humble man I have ever met. Al does nothing for this community for power or money. He does all that he has done, the list being endless, because he cares about this community and has from the day he moved here more than 39 years ago!

In addition to putting down someone Ms. Rivas does not know, she has insulted this community. Al was voted Man of the Year by this community. Does she really believe that is true because this community is so naive as to cast their vote because, for the moment, Al has told them something they want to hear or he has “changed parties to get their votes?”

Please!!! Rather, Al received overwhelming support in his campaign for mayor because he has, for more than three decades, tirelessly, selflessly, given his time, money and heart to this place called Gilroy. As mayor he will continue to do that, not for money or power, simply, for Gilroy and the people who live here. Each and every person who voted for him did so because they know the Al I have described here, not because he switched parties in the hopes that he would win their vote and gain some benefit for himself.

Al is running for mayor for the benefit of Gilroy and nothing else!! Al only does something because he believes in it. When Al makes a commitment to you, for you, you can be assured that he will do everything in his power to make it happen.
