Gilroy – A car accident Wednesday afternoon involving Vilma Pinheiro, wife of Mayor Al Pinheiro, left two cars severely damaged but resulted in no major injuries, according to the mayor and police.

Pinheiro said his wife is “fine” except for a sprained wrist, but expressed amazement that she and their son, as well as two guests from Portugal who were passengers in the back seat, escaped without more serious injuries.

The collision occurred shortly after 2:30pm at the corner of Welburn Avenue and Kelton Drive, just east of Santa Teresa Boulevard.

Pinheiro’s wife was driving west on Welburn when a single man driving a Plymouth Colt turned left onto Kelton Drive, cutting in front of her vehicle.

Pinheiro said his wife broad-sided the Colt, which had no other passengers.

Other than reporting several minor injuries, police would not release any details about the accident.

Pinheiro said his wife’s Mercedes and likely the Colt appeared damaged beyond repair.

Police said no citations were issued.
