Dear Editor:

As someone deeply involved in social issues, I am aware of the devastating impact of a projected $111 million Santa Clara County deficit that could dramatically reduce services to the most vulnerable citizens of our county. With diminishing support from the federal and state government, Santa Clara County, along with its partnership with dozens of community based organizations, is confronted with drastic cuts to the general fund. This will put in jeopardy local safety net services to children, victims of domestic violence, senior day care and nutrition programs and a myriad of other vital programs.

I support and have been closely following Measure A, the county’s Transportation and Healthcare Initiative. As a result, I was surprised to read the headline and story written by Matt King on the judge’s court order to require that Measure A opponents delete or amend their ballot statement. The headline reads that a “compromise” was reached. A compromise it was not.

The judge in the published court order required legally that the No on Measure A group remove or delete (4) sections of their ballot statement because they were inaccurate and misleading. This directive is not a compromise.

Measure A will have proponents and opponents in an open debate that I truly welcome. It is incumbent however, that the media get the information they are reporting right. The quotes taken from the No on Measure A advocate and leader, Mr. Perry from Mountain View gives a picture that the “battle” over the ballot was a “win” for them. Clearly, the court order states otherwise. Please Mr. King, print the story correctly. We all need the facts to make an informed decision.
