An 18-year-old male was stabbed with a screwdriver he brought to a fight, then later arrested for assaulting two juveniles, according to Morgan Hill police.

The incident unfolded about 8:50 p.m. Thursday when two male juveniles from Morgan Hill, 16 and 17, were walking on Monterey Road near San Pedro Avenue. An unknown number of male subjects in a light blue Thunderbird, began circling the teens. The occupants spat at and yelled gang slurs at the juveniles, police said. The teens yelled back. Then, two adult males got out of the car and attacked the juveniles with screwdrivers and pipes, police said. During the attack, which police said may be gang-related, one of the assailants dropped a screwdriver. One of the juveniles picked it up and, attempting to fend off Angel Ponce, an 18-year-old Morgan Hill resident who was attacking his friend, stabbed him in the left forearm. Ponce suffered a 4-inch laceration and dislocated shoulder.

All four fled the scene, but when police arrived they spotted the two juveniles who suffered minor injuries. Officers later located the Thunderbird in front of Ponce’s residence. He was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center by ambulance and later arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident is under investigation, police said.
