The Mid Cal Wrestling Tournament is in full swing and Gilroy has plenty of local faces still alive after the first day.
The Mustangs have eight wrestlers in the quarterfinals and another four still alive in the consolation bracket. Christopher had two wrestlers qualify for day-two, joining San Benito and Sobrato as locals with wrestlers still alive. Both schools have one wrestler advance to Saturday. Below is a list by weight of who is alive and who had a win during the tournament.
108: Nic Aguilar had a bye in the first round then pinned Steven Aranda of Clovis in the second period. He qualified for the quarterfinals with a tech-fall over Akhil Vega of Cupertino. Vega is coming off a win at the Bert Mar Tournament.
115: Joseph Delgado pinned Robert Trillo of Lincoln in the second round of their match to open his day. He then earned an 11-4 major decision over Roberto Ortiz of Alvarez to qualify for quarters. He will face Ethan Leake of Buchanan Saturday.
122: Both Gilroy wrestlers in 122 will start Saturday in the Consolation bracket after Daniel Vascarra fell by pin against Luis Ramos of Selm to miss out on the quarter finals. Teammate Zef Oshiro also fell to Ramos just before Vascarra, denying an all Gilroy round of 16. Both wrestlers will have to win five matches to claim third place on Saturday.
Sobrato’s Felipe Duenas, the runner up at Bert Mar, will likewise be making his way through the consol ranks, having lost in the third round in a 4-3 decision.
128: Johnny Fox will open the day in the quarterfinals, after rattling off a pin in his first match and a major decision in his second. Fox defeated Mark Alvarez of Dinu in the third round and earned a 13-3 win over Rock Bik to advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile Christopher’s Justin Garza fell in a 5-1 decision in his opening round match and was forced down to the consolation bracket. There he won his two matches by pinfall, both in the second round. He ultimately fell in the last round of the day to bow out.
134: Gilroy’s Alex Felix pinned his way to the quarterfinals, defeating Daniel Rodriguez of CC in the first round and Miguel Zeferino of Sout in the second round of their match. He will take on Ray Aranda of Clovis to open up competition Saturday.
Christopher’s Mario Anchondo had a win in the first round of the consolation bracket after falling in the first round of the day. He bowed out in the next round when he was pinned in the second round.
140: Gilroy’s Gavin Melendez rode a late-time pin and a 10-2 decision to advance to the quarters. The senior defeated An Nguyen of Wilcox in the third round before taking down Max Agurrie in a 10-2 win to qualify for the quarters. Meanwhile, Nate Villarreal, the Bert Mar Champion, fell in a 9-4 decision to slide to the consolation bracket. Villarreal fell to Half Moon Bay’s Will Fullerton and was forced to withdraw due to injury.
147: Gilroy’s Joe Barnes earned a pin in his first match and a tech-fall shortened win to qualify for the quarterfinals. De defeated Victor Cortes of Balb 18-2, ending the contest in the second period.
154: Juan Villarreal had a 56-second pin to open his day after a bye then earned a 13-2 major decision win to qualify for the quarters.
Meanwhile, Anthony Figueroa of Christopher opened strong with a tech fall in the second round of his opening match. But he went on to lose in the second round to Colby Lankfort of Pittsburg, but he battled back in the consols. He came out swinging with a pin in his first match and then came back to win a close 7-6 battle and a pinfall in his final match of Friday to advance to Saturday.
162: Javin Aragon pinned his way to the quarter finals, defeating Kevin Garcia of South San Francisco at the 4-minute mark and defeated Ben Khoury of Serra in just 35 seconds. He will face Angel Vasquez of Alvarez. David Gil of San Benito lost in his opening bout by pinfall, but qualified for the second day of action, facing Khoury to open things up.
172: Robert Zepeda and Angel Carbajal both slid to the consol bracket, with both winning in their opening rounds but not in their next. Zepeda was denied a chance at the quarters after falling by pin to top-ranked Cade Belshay of Buchanan. Carbajal fell in the second round to Adam Mena of Christopher, who fell to Atwarter’s Johnny Juarez before the quarters.. Zepeda and Carbajal will open second day of competition in the consol bracket. Mena will face Humberto Baza of Palma in the consols.
Anthony Lopez of Christopher opened the tournament with a pin late in the second round, but subsequently lost in his next match to fall to the consols. He won his first match with a 9-0 win and then pinned his next opponent in the second round. But Lopez bowed out with a pin at the 50-second mark.
184: San Benito’s Michael Camacho earned pins in the second rounds of both his matches to qualify for the quarterfinals Saturday. He will square off against Monte Vista Christian’s Lucas Olgiati to open things up.
Christopher’s Nathan Doyal earned a forfeit win to open the tournament, but subsequently lost two in a row to bow out.
197: Noe Garcia cruised through the first two rounds of Mid Cals, winning by pin in the first 22 seconds of his match against Anthony Carbajal of Pittsburg. He then qualified for quarters with a 13-4 major decision over Michael Munson of Cupertino.
222: Antonio Gomez of Christopher won a close 4-2 decision to open his day in the second round, but found himself in a tough battle in the third. Adam Camp of Saratoga pinned the Cougar in less than a minute. Gomez then had a heartbreaking 5-2 loss in his consolation round to bow out of the tournament.
Heavyweight: Collins Okoronkwo of Christopher had a pin in the opening round, but subsequently fell in two straight matches to bow out.
