Mariners back up catcher Adam Moore will need surgery to repair a torn meniscus and was placed on the 60-day disabled list, according to sources, thus leaving Seattle with just one catcher on its 40-man roster, Miguel Olivo, and freeing up the option for Gimenez.
Gimenez, will back up the Mariners everyday man behind the plate and could also see time in the outfield. Gimenez, 28, is a career .160 hitter in 73 games at the big league level.
The former Mustang signed a Minor League deal with the Mariners in the offseason after spending the previous few seasons in the Cleveland Indians organizations. Gimenez played under current Seattle manager Eric Wedge in 2009 with the Indians.
Coincidentally, the Mariners have their home opener tonight against the Indians. Gimenez is not in the starting lineup.
