Anchored by Brian Ransom’s complete game, three-hit gem on the mound, the Christopher High baseball team took down Monte Vista Christian 3-1 in a key Monterey Bay League matchup Monday in Watsonville.
The Cougars (13-5 overall, 8-1 MBL) are three games into a four-game stretch against Monterey and MVC – the two other top teams in the league. Monday’s victory came on the heels of a 6-4 loss to Monterey on Friday – the Cougars first defeat in league play. CHS beat the Toreadores (13-8 overall, 10-2 MBL) 9-3 last Wednesday.
With Monday’s triumph over MVC (16-4 overall, 9-2 MBL), the Cougars remain the lone one-loss team in the MBL.
Christopher tallied twice in the first and once in the sixth. Brennan Wilson had two hits, including a double, and scored a run, Bryant Cid also had two hits, a double and a RBI and Nick Cordova delivered a timely RBI-double in the sixth that extended the lead to the 3-1 score.
The same two teams battle Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Gilroy.
SOFTBALL
The Gilroy High softball team snapped out of a pesky losing streak with a 9-2 road victory over Tri-County Athletic League opponent North Salinas on Monday.
The win evens Gilroy’s league mark at 3-3.
The Mustangs have a busy week, including road tilts at Alisal today and at Notre Dame on Thursday plus a nonleague home game with section power Mitty on Wednesday.
GOLF
The Tri-County Athletic League Valley Division regular season came to a close Monday at Gilroy Golf Course and the Christopher High golf team continued its charge to the top, winning the six-team match.
Jaeshawn Hoenck’s 39, Tyson Hill and Peter Hilkene 43’s, RJ Montez’s 47, Steven Lerma’s 51 and Yafet Bitwoded’s 53 contributed to the top team score of 223 for the Cougars’ third straight match victory, which puts them in first place heading into the 18-hole league finals at Salinas Golf and Country Club, where the Cougars will need to shoot lower than North Salinas to earn a Central Coast Section berth.
Other team scores from Monday: N Salinas 233; Alisal 250; Alvarez 256; N Monterey County 268; and Gilroy 384. Olrick Breboneria won medalist honors with a 37.
The TCAL finals are April 30.
