Money to Stop Substance Abuse

San Jose – The U.S. Department of Health awarded a five-year, $3.7 million grant to Santa Clara County to expand its program to help drug-abusing families with young children. The money will primarily go to fund the Dependency Drug Treatment Center, which helps pregnant women and mother who have problems with methamphetamine and drug addictions.

Wine and All That Jazz

Gilroy – The Gilroy Foundation presents the 18th annual “Day In The Country” wine and jazz festival, featuring outstanding wines and food, and silent and live auctions. Community Health Day

Gilroy – Rebekah Children’s Services is hosting the 4th annual Gilroy Community Health Day, today at Rebekah Children’s Services, 290 IOOF Ave., from 11am to 3pm. Health screenings, medical advice and more. Everything is free. A Mexican Consulate representative will be there to provide information regarding retirement in Mexico, real estate in Mexico, dual citizenship, custom regulations and much more. This is a non-alcohol and non-smoking event. The Gilroy Community Health Day Committee is comprised of local organizations and agencies that have come together to develop and accomplish a vision of providing health, wellness and disease prevention within our community by increasing awareness and access to health care resources.

Body Specimen at Library

Gilroy – A real body specimen from the BODY WORLDS 2 & The Three Pound Gem: Gunther von Hagens’ Anatomical Exhibit of Real Human Bodies exhibition at The Tech Museum of Innovation will appear at the Gilroy Library today, to accompany a talk about health and wellness.

The free presentation at 2pm will feature Paul Hepfer, MS, Vice President of Programs for The Health Trust, speaking on “Inside Out: Learning about your body can be the first step towards improved health and wellness.”

Strength on Display

Gilroy – Radical Reality will be demonstrating feats of physical strength as part of a presentation on self-esteem. The head of the group will speak Sunday at 8:30 and 10:30am at the New Hope Community Church. Then, the group will perform at Gilroy High School, Brownell Middle School and South Valley Middle School on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. The group will also hold a faith-based rally Wednesday 6pm at the high school.

Save Coyote Valley Rally

San Jose – On Monday, opponents of the Coyote Valley Specific Plan will rally to show a lack of support for the destruction of San Jose’s last remaining stretch of farmland. At 5pm, they will gather by the fountains in front of City Hall, 200 E. Santa Clara St. At 5:30pm, we will enter the Coyote Valley Task Force Meeting and tell the city what we think. Members of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band will be present to tell city officials what impact CVSP will have on tribal sites and their historic homeland.

Awards Presentation

Gilroy – Gavilan College will present its annual Community Spirit Awards at the Hilton Garden Inn, 6070 Monterey Road, from 6:45 to 8am Wednesday. The awards will be given as part of a Gilroy Chamber of Commerce breakfast and costs $10 with a reservation and $15 without a reservation. Awardees include Sue Thurman and Peggy Ghysels of Country Clutter, the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center and Dentistry for Children, operated by Michael McKeever.

Seniors Resource Fair

San Jose – Seniors are invited to the free County Adult Services Resource Fair at the Unity Center, 765 Story Road, in San Jose, Thursday from 9am to 1pm. The event, put on by Santa Clara County, will include glucose, bone density, blood pressure and cholesterol testing. There will also be health professionals on hand to answer questions as well as representatives from about 100 community and nonprofit organizations.
