GILROY — At 11:30 this morning, the buildings where much of Gilroy’s maintenance services are housed, will celebrate an updating of it’s own with the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Corporation Yard Administration Building and Fleet Services Building on 613 Old Gilroy Road.
The new buildings are on the same site as the old Corporation Yard and Fleet Services buildings, which have been converted to storage units for equipment. The Corporation Yard houses several city maintenance services, including parks and landscape, streets, sewers and storm drains, water production, storage, and distribution, vehicle and equipment, and building and facilities maintenance.
“This has been in the works for many years,” said Joe Kline, the city’s public information officer.
The old buildings, which are more than 30 years old, weren’t up to the latest environmental and safety regulations.
This was especially true for the fleet building, which houses and maintains the city’s vehicles such as dump trucks, tractors, mowers, and the flusher truck. That building did not meet current earthquake-safety regulations, and as the city needed to buy more vehicles to match the growing population, it didn’t have the facilities to dispose of an increasing amount of used oil and other car fluids.
“The city has grown,” said Kline. “We couldn’t house everything in the old buildings.”
Included in the new buildings, which have been in use for a month and a half, are men’s and women’s locker rooms, a combination lunch/training room, a reception area, an updated fleet maintenance shop, and offices for the fleet and facilities operations employees. The building is also designed to act as a backup Emergency Operations Center in the event of a major disaster in the area.
