A Morgan Hill man was arrested in Los Altos for possession of explosives.

After pulling over Troy Moulton, 47, of Peebles Avenue, for routine traffic violations at 10 a.m. Nov. 27, Los Altos police officers found illegal explosive devices inside the vehicle.

Santa Clara County Sgt. Brian Washburn, a member of the responding bomb squad, said there were 15 homemade explosives in the car, varying in length from three inches to more than five inches.

“As far of the volume of devices, this is a once-a-year type situation,” Washburn said. Since they were homemade with unknown materials, the squad determined the bombs unsafe for transport, Washburn said. They went to an open field and conducted an “emergency destruction,” or controlled detonation of the bombs.

Washburn said he couldn’t say how big of an explosion was possible with the bombs.

Moulton, who was arrested in Gilroy in 2004 for possession of and being under the influence of a controlled substance, was booked into county jail on suspicion of possession of explosives, driving with a suspended drivers license, false evidence of registration and possession of an open container of alcohol.

Los Altos Police Department detectives were not immediately available to comment.
