Residents of west Morgan Hill are urged to protect their pets and children after the presence of a mountain lion was detected early this morning.

A resident who tends livestock on the 100 block of West Dunne Avenue found a dead goat on the property today, Morgan Hill police Sgt. Jerry Neumayer said.

The resident thought the animal had been killed by a mountain lion sometime between 1 and 6 a.m. this morning, Neumayer said.

Police and authorities from the department of fish and game investigated the incident, and determined that bite marks and other evidence found on the goat carcass were likely caused by a mountain lion.

MHPD sent out a recorded message by phone to residents of the area, informing them of the possible presence of the predator, and notifying them they should secure their pets, livestock and small children at night.

Police have also sent out letters to the Morgan Hill Unified School District and private schools in the area to let them know of the possible danger, Neumayer said.

Authorities from the department of fish and game set up a trap in the area to attempt to capture the animal.
