TCAL All-Star Boys win, Girls lose, in weekend tournaments
Two teams, 11 all-stars.
In this weekend’s 2nd Annual Senior Prep All-Star Game By the Bay, the boys’ and girls’ Gilroy High basketball teams had eleven all-star representatives for the Tri-County Athletic League in the all-senior event. On the bench, it had two more in coaches Kari Williams and Bud Ogden, who were chosen to lead each of the TCAL squads.
The boys’ team, which included Gilroy players Ryan Chisolm, Christian Cania, Vinny DeLorenzo, Jeremy Teschera, Dominik Wilkins and Chris Yates, defeated the All-Stars from the Mission Trail Athletic League (MTAL) 81-69.
The girls’ team fell 61-52 to the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL). Both games were played at Seaside High.
Chisolm, who scored 18 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had four blocks, was named Most Valuable Player.
“Ryan played maybe his best all-around game that I’ve seen him play,” Ogden said. “He was as good on the defensive end with his blocks as he was in scoring.”
Other players on the boys’ all-star team were San Benito’s Daryl Baladad and Vince Bautista, Salinas’ Zack Wallace and Live Oak’s Bobby Long.
Wallace had a team-high 19 points for the TCAL All-Stars. King City’s Josh Zamora led the MTAL with 16 points.
“It was an awful lot different than a pressure-packed TCAL or playoff game and good to see them have fun,” Ogden said.
The girls’ TCAL team, which included Gilroy players Kristen Campos, Jessica Groppe, Katherine Hussey and Marissa Nowakowski, fell to the SCCAL All-Stars in a game that was close up to the very end.
Playing alongside the four Gilroy seniors were fellow TCAL players Carly Haddan and Nina Oropeza of Salinas, Mattie Borges and Colleen Henningsen of Live Oak and North Salinas’ Nicole Martinez.
“It was fun to get to coach (my seniors) again,” Williams said. “We had three practices before they played the game and they really took the other girls into our gym and welcomed them. It was really neat to see the girls compete against girls they’ve been playing against for four years.”
Ogden and Williams, who both were named TCAL coaches of the year, have also been asked to coach in the 20th Annual Kiwanis North-South All-Star Basketball Classic Several of the Gilroy seniors also will play in that game, which takes place Saturday, April 8 at Hartnell College in Salinas.
