Salinas – Needing a win to move into a tie for third place, Gilroy dropped a 6-1 decision to host North Salinas and instead finished fifth in the Tri-County Athletic League with a 5-7 record.
No. 3 doubles team Sidney Ebert and Anneliese Zelina defeated Diana Blackwell and Jessica DeLuna 7-5, 4-6, 10-3, and were the only Mustangs’ winners Thursday.
The Vikings (7-5) swept the singles matches in straight sets. Laura Sanchez defeated Amy Huang 6-2, 6-1; Jennie Nguyen beat Emily Castro 6-2, 6-3; Claudia Sanchez turned back Gories Kwong 6-0, 6-1, and Roxanne Usi got past Cherilyn Christian 6-3, 6-1.
Matches in doubles were much closer with North Salinas getting wins from April Valdez and Audrey Sanchez over Holly Hunter and Karissa Tellez 7-5, 6-2, and Danielle Gutierrez and Jenny Tijing over Kim Johnson and Natalie Toews 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
The TCAL tournament gets under way at noon Monday at Salinas High School with the Nos. 1 and 2 singles and Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. The other matches are Wednesday at Chamisal Tennis & Fitness Club.
