Gilroy High’s varsity girls soccer team defeated Notre Dame at the Cal-State Monterey Bay campus Friday afternoon, winning the contest 1-0.

Freshman midfielder Erin Slattery provided the game¹s lone goal in the first 10 minutes, taking an assist from Kristi Figueroa.

With 70-plus minutes of action to play, the contest turned a bit chippy as five yellow cards were handed out, two going to Gilroy.

“It was a very aggressive game,” GHS coach Jose Hernandez said.

The Mustangs had several opportunities to extend their lead, but several shots went just wide or hit the post.

Hernandez said that along with Slattery and Figueroa, freshman keeper Lauren Bertero and junior forward Ariana Vera both had excellent performances for Gilroy.

For Bertero, it was her third straight shutout in Tri-County Athletic League play as the Mustangs moved to a perfect league record in as many games.

Gilroy is now 4-4-2 overall, and has a one game lead over San Benito in the TCAL standings.

The Mustangs’ junior varsity team also got a win over Notre Dame, blasting their opponents for a 6-0 victory.
