Gilroy’s varsity girls soccer team isn’t just having a great season. The Mustangs are having the greatest regular season in school history.
Friday’s 1-0 victory over the Notre Dame Spirits locked up the Tri-County Athletic League title for Gilroy after the San Benito Lady ‘Balers tied North Salinas 0-0 the same day.
While the Mustangs have now repeated as TCAL champs, another program first, this time there is no sharing going on between the Mustangs and Lady ‘Balers, whom Gilroy beat twice by a margin of 8-0 in two games this year and was forced to share the title with last season.
“The girls are proud about it, but this was one of our goals – not really the main goal,” Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said. “We still have a lot of work to do.”
The Mustangs have their sights set on a Central Coast Section title after beating North Salinas 2-0 Monday, which boosted the club’s record to 10-4-3 overall, 9-0-1 in the TCAL.
Gilroy has not lost a contest since December 22.
Despite having an undefeated league record and winning 9 league games for the first time in school history, coach Hernandez said his girls still need to improve their confidence.
“I think we’re a little tense,” he said. “We know this isn’t (just) what we want and we’re not at the level we need to be.
“We just have to keep working.”
Two ladies whose hard work paid off in the last week were Katelyn Nebesnick, who scored the lone goal in the recent victory over Notre Dame, and Kasandra Kachakji, who scored Gilroy’s only goal in the win over North Salinas Monday. The Mustangs received an own-goal courtesy of their opponents in the second half.
Hernandez and company are now focusing on getting ready for the playoffs, where Gilroy has never won a game.
“We talked about this week just really getting ready for CCS and speeding up our play,” Hernandez said. “And practicing to be perfect.”
