Gilroy’s varsity girls basketball team made a valiant effort at a comeback Thursday night, but the Mustangs ran out of gas in the end, falling 44-40 to the visiting Alisal Trojans.

The emotions of Senior Night helped and hurt Gilroy, which finished the first quarter tied 11-11 with Alisal. The second quarter, however, saw the Trojans build a 28-14 advantage going into halftime.

The Mustangs responded by outscoring Alisal 18-6 in the third period, making for an exciting final frame as Gilroy trailed by two, 34-32.

Charging back into the game seemed to use much of the Mustangs energy, though, as they couldn’t get over the final hump.

Gilroy’s Angela Silveira finished as the game’s leading scorer with 18 points to go with six rebounds and four blocks. Vanessa Wilkins was second on the team with 10 points. Mustangs freshman forward Chelsea Hill collected a game-high 19 rebounds to go with four blocks and three points and Gilroy senior forward Lindsey Foster had eight points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Hazel Gapol led the Trojans with 11 points.

Gilroy will now await word to see if it qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs. The team finished the season with an 11-13 record, 6-6 in the Tri-County Athletic League. Alisal finished the year 10-15, 6-6 TCAL.
