Gilroy High wrestling toppled another Tri-County Athletic League opponent Wednesday night, defeating Salinas 62-16.
The Mustangs’ Tim Ibanez was able to pin his opponent in one minute and 23 seconds, giving the senior his first match and victory of the season. Ibanez has been held out of competition while waiting for the Central Coast Section office to process his paperwork.
Other GHS winners by pin included Martin Gonzalez (39 seconds), Tim Caspary (1:07), Ethan Ogle (1:28, third round), Hunter Collins (1:27, second round) and Jesse Rogers (21 seconds). Jesse Delgado scored a victory for the Mustangs with a 14-5 major decision, Travis Sakamoto got a decision 10-4 for Gilroy and Mike Penyacsek defeated his Salinas counterpart 15-2. Gilroy’s Jasmine Yanez lost her match 8-0.
The Mustangs’ focus now shifts to Mid-Cals, which will be taking place Friday and Saturday at Gilroy High. The event will draw more than 50 teams from the around the area and over 300 wrestlers total. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. both days and run through the evening.
