GILROY – After defending its title this weekend at the Leigh Roundup Tournament, the GHS varsity field hockey team went right back to work Monday night defeating a perennially talented Archbishop Mitty team 1-0 at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Coach Adam Gemar wrote through e-mail that Monday’s game was the first real test the Mustangs faced during the young season.

“The game was intense from the get go,” Gemar wrote. “Our offense was tested and our defense was tested. Our transition game was tested. Every aspect of our game was tested.”

Both teams remained scoreless through the first half and midway through the second before Shayna Robledo broke the 0-0 tie with the game-winning goal.

Dani Hemeon took a pass baseline and guided the ball back to center in front of the net where Robledo was able to put it past the Monarchs’ goalie.

The Mustangs (6-0, 2-0) are back at it again today on the road against Mission Trail opponent Monterey. GHS travels to Mountain View for another difficult non-league challenge against St. Francis on Thursday to finish out a busy week.
