Gilroy’s girls varsity volleyball team received its first loss of the season Tuesday, falling to the Mount Madonna Hawks (5-1) 17-25, 14-25 and 17-25.
According to GHS coach Sue Grogan, the Hawks play was as hot as the temperatures outside.
“It was kind of interesting because as hot as it was here (in Gilroy), it was just as hot if not worse in their gym,” she said. “It kind of puts you through a loop having to deal with that heat, but, their players had to play in it too.”
Senior Caitlin Chisolm was the Mustangs’ best performer in the losing effort, compiling 10 kills to go with five digs and one block. Junior Brittany Lewis and sophomore Lindsay Meazell both had eight assists.
Madonna’s two terrors, Alexa Rosendale and Hannah Meade, who had 17 and 14 kills, respectively, were just too much for GHS to handle at the net. The pair also combined for 21 digs, denying Gilroy from capitalizing on numerous scoring opportunities.
“Those (two) girls are some heavy hitters,” Grogan said. “They’ve definitely got a career there for themselves. I don’t know if they’re going anywhere after they graduate, but I know that we had trouble with them last year as juniors and they’ve done nothing but improved.
“Over half of my team is sophomores so these girls have a long road head of them and they just need to keep their heads up and know they tried their hardest,” Grogan said.
GHS is now 2-1 in the preseason, with its next game coming Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Mount Pleasant in San Jose.
“That’s what’s kind of nice about preseason,” Grogan said. “You take your wins and losses and learn from them.”
Note: The freshman girls team will be playing against Seaside tomorrow at 4pm in the GHS gym.
