A county superintendent with 15 years of experience under his belt will take over as Superintendent for the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
Charles Weis, superintendent of Ventura County’s schools since 1993, is entering contractual negotiations with Santa Clara County. His employment is pending negations and an April 9 visit to Ventura by board members, said Jane Howard, board president.
“We are very excited at the prospect of having Dr. Weis take over at the county office,” Howard said. “It’s a time of challenges in education, but also of opportunities, and we thing he is the person to meet those challenges, and pursue those opportunities.”
Weis was selected from a pool of about 15 “extremely impressive” candidates, according to Howard. The move to hire him resulted after two special board meetings at which six finalists were interviewed.
Weis will start July 1 pending the final decision and will be replacing Joe Fimiani, interim superintendent since November 2007. He took over for previous superintendent, Colleen Wilcox, who retired last September.*
