Emphasizing the convenience and low cost to schedule a weekend trip to visit the historic wineries in South Santa Clara Valley, the art galleries in Morgan Hill or a shopping day at the Gilroy Premium Outlets, many attendees were pleasantly surprised to hear about what South County has to offer.

Jane Howard and Pam Gimenez of the Gilroy Visitors Bureau, along with Chris Bryant, interim president/CEO of the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, represented the regional marketing group, South Santa Clara Valley Tourism Partnership. This joint effort promoting Morgan Hill and Gilroy is one of several planned for the upcoming year.

Romney wins straw poll

Members and guests of the South Valley Republican Women Federated club voiced their presidential preferences with a straw poll conducted Saturday. Prior to voting, representatives from four of the Republican presidential campaigns made 10-minute speeches on behalf of their candidates, hoping to win over the 21 voters present. Mitt Romney was the evening’s winner, capturing 38 percent of the vote. He was followed by Thompson at 29 percent, Giuliani at 24 percent and McCain at 9 percent. None of the other Republican candidates received votes.

Despite the lack of consensus about who should become the next Republican presidential nominee, members were all strongly in agreement about one thing – defeating the Democratic nominee in the fall. “I was impressed with how unified all of the participants were when it came to discussing the November General Election,” observed club president Georgia Trefts-Garfink. “It is clear that no matter who wins the Republican nomination, every person in that room is going to get behind him.”

The South Valley Republican Women Federated was founded in 2006 by a group of local Republican women. The club’s purpose is to increase Republican activism and awareness in South San Jose, Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy. Monthly meetings are held on Saturday afternoons and are open to Republican men and women. For more information, email: [email protected].
