Adventure with Auntie Adelina

The Karlsruhe-Baden Baden airport departure lounge for the 12:15 p.m. flight to Majorca was filled with people disguised as Americans but speaking German. The dress code was jeans and T-shirts emblazoned with slogans: “The Rolling Stones,” “Jones,” “Beautiful” and “Hollister Surf Club.”

The art of cursive is being lost

Amidst current discussions and controversy about the merits and challenges of the new “Core Curriculum,” a less dramatic yet equally important issue is the trend away from teaching “cursive” in our schools. As a retired teacher and current voter, genealogist and sports fan, I think the loss of the ability to write (and therefore read) cursive is another step in the increasing “depersonalization” of our culture with potentially disastrous consequences. I was further reminded of this as I went to vote by mail, where, on the envelope, you are told emphatically to sign your name (not print it) for your vote to count.

Drainage problems cause standing water

There is standing water next to the baseball backstop at El Roble Park, on Santa Theresa Drive. It's muddy in many spots. I've talked to the school district and they say the right things, but overwatering is overwatering and they shouldn't be allowed to do it. Cut it back to one day a week watering, not three times a week. It's a mess. Thank you very much.

Spike in development spells need for new elementary school

That expected increase in residents already has Gilroy Unified School District officials planning for a brand new elementary school—and wondering how to pay for a new middle and high school further down the road.

Voters give Measure F a failing grade

Despite the injection of more than $35,000 in the coffers of the campaign in favor of Measure F—mainly from developers and car dealers—Gilroy voters spoke and the half-cent sales tax increase fell short by more than 550 votes, based on unofficial semi-final results from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.
