Update: Officers make one arrest in alleged homicide case
Hollister police officers arrested a 17-year-old male from Morgan Hill Wednesday for the alleged murder of Andres Guzman, 19, of Hollister, Aug. 8. The arrest was made around 1 p.m.

Lost peregrine falcon heads home

Just last month, I wrote about the yellow-bellied marmot who hitched a ride on a car from the Eastern Sierra to Morgan Hill. Dorothy Ann Howell July 11, 1922 – July 15, 2013
Dorothy A. Howell (formerly, Dorothy Ann Farotto), niece of George and Angie Martin, owners of Martin’s Hardware Store in the 1930-50, died peacefully on July 15th surrounded by her family. She was 91. A funeral Mass will be held for her at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church Street, Monterey, CA 93940 on August 24th at 9:30 A.M. followed by a reception in the Parish Hall across the street.

Manuela Orta May 12, 1918 – August 9, 2013
Manuela Orta died peacefully in her home in Morgan Hill. Mrs. Orta was a native of Crystal City, Tx. and lived in Morgan Hill for over 50 years. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and a great-great-grandmother all of which helped her become the strong and wise matriarch of her family. She was a loving mother to Santa Morales of Campbell, Rosie Flores, Gloria Figueroa, and Rey Orta of San Jose, Rudy Orta (Carolina) and Teresa Crue (Frank) of Morgan Hill, Lupe Lopez (Edmundo) of Pinole, Ramon Orta (Vicki) of Greenfield, Isabel Jones (Allen) of Gilroy, and Ramiro Orta (Carolyn) of San Mateo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Guadalupe Orta, and her children Ricardo, Robert, Rachel Orta and Carmen Gonzalez, and grandchildren Abel Morales and Rick Orta. She was a loving grandmother to 31 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed and loved forever.
Benefit show at 9Lives this Friday
Local musicians will be donating their time and talents this Friday night for a benefit show for Community Solutions and St. Joseph's Family Center, two leading nonprofit organizations providing social services in South County.
