GECA student wins Rotary speech competition

Ashley Tangeman won the Gilroy Sunrise Rotary Club speech competition Jan. 15. She will advance to the Area 6 competition Jan. 24 hosted by the Almaden Valley Rotary Club at Boulder Ridge Golf Club.

High school choir spaghetti dinner

The Gilroy and Christopher Choral Program will hold a fundraiser spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Gilroy High School cafeteria. Money from ticket sales helps pay for transportation to the Central California Choral Festival April 12 at Cal Poly, San Luis Opispo and also helps the Chamber Singers raise money to sing in Washington D.C. April 2-7. The goal is to sell 1,500 tickets. The meal includes pasta with three sauces made by Mama Mia’s, garlic bread, salad dessert and drink. Tickets Tickets are $8 and are available in advance from any choir member or at the door. Take-out is available. Details: Phil Robb at [email protected].

Takko-the-town: Visitors from Japan keep ties between sister cities strong

This past week, Gilroy's Sister City in Takko-Machi, Japan, sent a group of five senior high school students to spend a week in Garlic Capital. The group was hosted by local families who very generously opened their homes to the visitors and provided them not only with gracious hospitality, but a great experience of American life and entertainment.

CHS hosts Zumba fundraiser

Christopher High School 's Parent Club is sponsoring a Zumba fundraising event Jan. 19 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the high school's main gym where participants can kick start their new year's fitness routine and help raise money for the school.

New immunization law requires parents to make “informed decisions”

On Sep. 30 Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 2109 into law which, as of Jan. 1, 2014, requires all California parents who do not have their children immunized to read information about the benefits and risks of immunizations. Parents must sign a waiver from a physician or a nurse practitioner stating they have received that information, before they will be allowed to enroll their children in school.
