Nieves Lopez Daniels

Nieves Lopez Daniels, of Hollister, CA passed away suddenly at her home on August 20, 2010. Nieves was a kind-hearted person who lived life to the fullest. She cherished her family and we are all Blessed to have the memories of all those special times. Born in Cadepli, Bangar, La Union, Philippines, she came to Hollister to visit family in 1961. She married Arcadio “Danny” Daniels on April 28, 1962 and they were married for 38 years until his death on October 7, 2000. Nieves is survived by her only daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Curtis Williams, grandchildren, Tyler and Kayla Williams, and great-granddaughter, Vallerie Claire all of Hollister. Nieves loved music and was especially proud of her grandchildren when they played their instruments for her. She is also survived by sisters Leonor Cura of Monterey, CA, Corazon Molina of Hollister, CA, Pacita Araos of the Philippines, her brother and sister-in-law, Virgilio and Emma Mortela of Hollister, sister-in-law Leticia Mortela of the Philippines as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Nieves was preceded in death by her parents, Severino and Victorina Mortela, her sisters, Magdalena Dacanay and Sylvia Obaldo and her brother, Abelardo Mortela.

Nieves was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Benedict’s Church and the Filipino American Community of San Benito County. She was employed as an ordnance production worker at Teledyne McCormick-Selph until she retired in 1991 after 22 years. She spent most of her retirement days working in her yard as she was an avid gardener and loved tending to all her plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables. Her front yard is landscaped with many beautiful flowers and people will always remember seeing the landmark bougainvillea plant near the front door. She was known as the “persimmon lady” to her neighbors as every year she would harvest her persimmon trees and sell or give away the fruit. She loved to cross-stitch, knit and crochet and has many beautiful completed pieces displayed in her home. She loved to sew and cook and she worked as a seamstress and in the family restaurant in Baguio City, Philippines before moving to the states. Nieves enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and her friends. Nieves had a big heart and always helped whenever it was needed and she opened her home to many people over the years. Nieves will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 26th, 2010, from 10:00 A.M. until 8:30 P.M., with the recitation of the rosary at 7:00 P.M. at the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister. Family and friends will leave the funeral home on Friday morning at 9:30 A.M. for a 10:00 A.M. Mass of The Ressurection at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church 1200 Fairview Rd., Hollister. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
