GREEN PHONE: This week, the Green Phone received a couple of calls in response to the caller last week concerned that his or her child was not getting any playing time on the Gilroy High freshman football team. The Green Phone also had a call about why the varsity cheerleaders weren’t at the football game, and there was a caller fed up with JV hype.

CALLER 1: I’m calling in response to the caller to the Green Phone complaining about the Gilroy High football team, especially the freshman team. First of all there is 70 players, not 40 or 50.

Second there is a no-cut policy at Gilroy High, so everyone has the opportunity to be on a high-school football team, which for some could be their only chance in a lifetime – a great opportunity.

Third I encourage the parents, whoever it is that called in, to go to practice. Only two of our parents ever show up. The team practices five days a week, – Monday through Friday usually 4-7pm or 4-8pm.

Many kids are asked by the coaches if they want to go in. Some kids say “no.” Half the time they are not paying attention and they don’t even hear their name being called.

Fourth, everyone has their gift in life. Basically, every child should have the opportunity to check out which gift they have. Maybe football is not the gift for that particular student. Hey, there is baseball, basketball, choir, band, wrestling – Gilroy has an awesome wrestling team. I encourage the kids to check into the other options.

Or Gilroy High School could return to a cut policy and cut kids so some kids will never have the opportunity to be on a high school football team and never have the chance to possibly start and just fly and soar as an awesome football player.

I just wish that everyone would back the children and back the coaches that are volunteers to my understanding. People can always try out for and apply to be a coach.

GREEN PHONE: And …

CALLER 2: I think we should keep it positive. I think the coaches are doing a wonderful job. It doesn’t help when we have parents who are disrespecting the coaches in front of the students and football players.

The last game we had a dad who, after the game when the coach was trying to speak to the players, completely disrespect the coach. He was yelling over to him, calling the coach dumb. I just think that it completely disrespectful.

I think the coaches are doing the best they can. The kids are doing the best they can. When you have a team of 60 kids, you kind of need to expect that not every kid is going to play. I’ve gone to every single game, and the teams we have played played their starters also.

Some of the teams used their starters on both offense or defense. Gilroy has separate offensive and defensive team because we have so many. The parents should try to keep positive in front of the players. If they have something to say, they should say it on the side not in front of the players. Good job to all the players.

CALLER 3: Hello I was at the varsity football game Saturday against Alvarez, and there was a no-showing of cheerleaders. I was just wondering because there was such a ruckus about them going to Hawaii. Did they leave early or what?

GREEN PHONE: No, the cheerleaders didn’t take matters in their hands by starting to swim or row toward Hawaii for their performance during the Pro Bowl in February. The team does go to home games and some away games. However, for this particular game, the coach who was supposed to chaperone wasn’t able to go, so the team didn’t make the trip.

CALLER 4: JV parents need to get a life! If JV was so important, they’d have state playoffs for JV football. You’ll get your turn. In the meantime, shut up!

GREEN PHONE: Caller 4, sounds like you don’t have kids in the program.
