Dear Editor:

This is in response to Mr. Doug Meier’s opinion column from published Friday.

In his column, Mr. Meier stated that the superintendent needs to develop “technologically proficient teaching staffs. Training and more training.”

While there are some teachers who are not as technologically savvy as they would like to be, I don’t think “training and more training” is the answer at this time. Gilroy’s teachers are already on overload from the additional staff development that the district has implemented. Participation in some of the staff development is mandatory while participation in other programs is “highly encouraged” or “expected.”

To make teachers take on even more, when they are working evenings and weekends just to keep up, would be unwise. In addition, we are at impasse with the district in contract negotiations and it is unreasonable to expect teachers to volunteer even more of their time until we reach a settlement.
