DEAR EDITOR:
I am writing to express my alarm at the impending Super Wal-Mart in Gilroy.
I live in Morgan Hill and have relatives in Hollister and we are all concerned about the impact of such a store for all three towns. Our mayor, Mr. Dennis Kennedy, recently expressed his concerns for Morgan Hill.
I wonder why the local media has emphasized the economic pros and cons of the Super Wal Mart and practically ignored the health and quality of life concerns that are so glaring in the EIR. The central valley is now the most polluted area in California.
We are going to join them rapidly if the Super Wal-Mart and other stores like this are permitted in our area. We now have 80 pounds per day of toxics allowed in our area.
The Super Wal-Mart would increase this pollution by 57 percent of reactive organic gases and 65 percent of nitrous oxide gases, both of which are implicated in many diseases such as asthma and certain kinds of cancers which are reaching epidemic proportions in this country.
Is increased sales tax revenue worth the consequences in quality of life for ourselves and our children and grandchildren?
I for one say no and hope that others who agree will contact Rose Barry at Gilroy First and consider bringing back Connie Rogers for another term on the City Council.
