It wasn’t a beautiful game, but the Mustangs did escape with a win at North Salinas Tuesday.

Gilroy’s varsity boys soccer team won 1-0, preserving the victory after scoring in the match’s second minute.

Taking an indirect free-kick from 35 yards out and left of the penalty box, Gilroy’s Oscar Zuniga serviced the ball into a crowd of bodies, hoping to find a teammate’s head. Instead, Zuniga’s pass found the foot of sweeper Kevin Grove, who calmly lobbed the ball over the keeper’s head to score the game’s lone goal.

With the win, the Mustangs moved to 10-3-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League. North Salinas is now 1-8-3 overall, 0-3-1 in league.

Gilroy coaches Armando Padilla and Brian Hall were more relieved to get the win than happy with the performance. Much of that has to do with getting 16 shots on goal, but just one that was struck true.

“Fortunately for us, we won the game,” Padilla said. “The race for TCAL is going to be pretty tight if we keep playing games like this.”

Hall noted that capturing a second straight league title is the ultimate goal for the regular season.

“We’re still 3-0-1 in league and every win gets us a little bit closer to our objective,” Hall said.

Gilroy’s junior varsity squad wasn’t able to fare as well, losing to North Salinas 2-0.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday, when the Mustangs play at Salinas.
