Gilroy Tennis Club hosts 28th Annual Gilroy Garlic
Tournament
Before the Gilroy Garlic Festival, there’s the Gilroy Garlic tennis tournament.

In its 28th year, the USTA-sanctioned Gilroy Garlic National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) drew over 155 participants from the Bay Area and beyond. The tournament, which was held at Gavilan College, Gilroy High and Las Animas Park, began Saturday and finished Monday night.

“Everything ran pretty smoothly,” said tournament co-director Barbara Hauer. “The only problem was the heat. It was very, very hot.”

Gilroy Tennis Club member Marcus Hughes walked away with two first place awards in the highest level of competition, winning the mixed doubles with Mary Jenney and the men’s doubles with Ray Blagof.

The Marques family of Gilroy also had a solid showing of its tennis talent. Mom Carol Marques took the finalist trophy, along with her son Rob in the 3.5 mixed doubles. Rob Marques also took the 3.5 men’s singles finalist award. Son Ken Marques also took home a finals award for his efforts with partner Dave Okada in the 4.0 men’s doubles competition. They lost to another Gilroy team in the finals.
