Checked into each game Christmas Day as the NBA finally opened its shortened 2011-12 season. Instead of 82 games it’s 66, and more back-to-back nights. Some great finishes highlighted the Christmas slate of games. But on the other hand, there was plenty of sloppy play due in most part to teams having just 10 days of practice and a pair of preseason games before kick starting the regular season. Aside from all of that, it’s great to have the NBA back.

Just as great was watching Mark Jackson get his first win as coach of the Golden State Warriors on Monday night. The Warriors defeated visiting Chicago 99-91.

• Congratulations to New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who set the NFL single-season passing yards record Monday night. With one game remaining, Bress has 5,087 yards, which bests Dan Marino’s previous mark of 5,084 that stood for 27 seasons.

• Trying to sort through a year’s worth of Gilroy-related sports to put together the top-10 moments of 2011. Have any suggestions? Shoot me an email with an idea. I will give it some consideration. Examples would be the Gilroy High wrestling team capturing an unpresedented ninth section title in a row. Or the CHS football team winning a league championship in just its second year of varsity football. Or, the GHS boys track and field team’s CCS crown.
