San Jose – With Gilroy High hosting the Central Coast Section track and field finals Friday for the first time, there had to be some Mustang representation.
Freshman Elise Ogle and sophomore Kathleen Miller made sure that would be the case by earning the necessary top-12 finishes in the distance races at Saturday’s CCS semfinals at San Jose City College to advance to the finals.
Ogle set the school record in the event for the third time this season while taking sixth in the 1,600 meters. Her time of 5:09.37 beat the 5:10.14 that she set while taking second at the Tri-County Athletic League championships on Gilroy’s home track the week prior.
The girl who beat her in TCALs, San Benito’s Courtney Allen, finished five seconds back and didn’t qualify for the finals. The top 12 in the two distance events earned a finals entry, while a top-eight finish in all other events was required.
Kathleen Miller, who has state meet experience from cross-country, will take a crack and advancing to the state finals in the 3,200. She finished ninth at 11:26.71 to move on to Friday.
The top three finishers in each event at the finals advance to the state meet, which will be held June 1 and 2 at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.
Sarah Unadia, who was first in the 100-meter hurdles in the TCAL finals, didn’t have enough in her to move past the semifinals. She improved on her TCAL time of 16.75 by running a 16.47, but settled for 14th. The winning time was 13.62 by Mt. Pleasant’s Vashti Thomas.
Ariana Vera also was unable to advance in her one event. She finished 26th in the 100 meters with a time of 13.23.
On the boys side, Derek Pesta was 21st in the 1,600 meters and Marshod Johnson tied for 16th in the triple jump.
The field events at Friday’s CCS finals will begin at 4pm and the running events are scheduled to start at 6pm.
