Dear Editor:
Former Santa Clara County Sheriff Bob Winter had it right in his recent letter to The Dispatch about progress, competition and capitalism. Stores will come and go and life goes on. Mayor Pinheiro hit the nail on the head when he questioned Arteaga’s Grocery Store owner on how he would have felt if the city had stopped him from expanding because PW Super had complained to the Council that it would cause PW to lose business? Arteaga’s owner squirmed, changed the subject and refused to answer.
The mayor was also correct when he pointed out that if Wal-Mart unionized, all of the sudden, Wal-Mart wouldn’t be evil anymore. John Zingrich, who never met a socialist liberal cause he didn’t like says, “It is a sad day.” If Mr. Zingrich is referring to Wal-Mart winning approval to build California’s first Supercenter, who exactly is sad? The United Food and Commercial Worker’s Union? Roger Rivera, the local UFCW president? Connie Rogers and her bizarre band of anti-growth, tree hugging, enviro-facists? Or “Voter Registration and Education” group, Gilroy First? I am sure fringe Dispatch columnist, Dennis “Meathead” Taylor, is seething that his endless diatribe on the evils of Wal-Mart only played well to his fan club of one. Himself.
I say it is a happy day that finally, the wishes of the majority of citizen’s of Gilroy who want 24-7 convenience and affordable prices will have their Supercenter. I say it is a happy day for the majority, who won out over a tiny, but incredibly, “fingernails on chalkboard,” loud and obnoxious bunch. The union bullies who tried to intimidate the Council with unruly and childlike behavior from the audience, failed. The majority of the Council did not buy the lies of the hired guns from the union or our local cult of anti-growth, anti-business sheep. The Council was thorough and patient, even to the point of violating Roberts Rules to allow Connie and cult to have one last stab speaking from the podium, while not allowing any pro-Wal-Mart speakers aside from Cynthia Walker, who somehow snuck her speaker card in. My speaker card was shredded.
Mayor Pinheiro and the rest of the council went out of their way to accommodate the anti-Wal-Mart group, so they can claim no foul just because they didn’t get their way. Do I sound pleased? You bet. For the past year, we have put up with the intolerably endless propaganda, outright lies and insults from these people. I applaud the Gilroy City Council, The Planning Commission and Gilroy city staff for their diligent work on this very important project. I also applaud Wal-Mart for its success.
Mark A. Zappa, Gilroy
