Dear editor:
As the co-founder of local comedy improvisational troupe ScripTease, I had to laugh when I heard that Kristen Porter, the recently fired Gilroy High teacher, was being scrutinized for her former participation in our group. That some are labeling her a “stripper” and using this accusation to justify her departure from Gilroy High is ludicrous.
ScripTease, “the world’s only stripping improv comedy troupe,” is a comedy show, not a nudie show. If you want live nude girls, go to Vegas. If you want a hilarious comedy show, come to ScripTease. You’ll probably see more bare skin at any Santa Cruz beach than you will at a ScripTease show.
To the woman who wrote that stripping is stripping, no matter what the context, I encourage you to look up the word “spoof” in the dictionary. ScripTease is a spoof on real stripping. That’s why you’ll often see us tripping as we take off pieces of clothing and generally making a mockery of ourselves. And don’t be so quick to assume that our little troupe objectifies women. As a graduate with a B.A. in women’s studies, let me assure you, gentle reader, that neither the women nor the men of ScripTease are being objectified. What we are doing is making people laugh, and, by the way, frequently raising money for local charities.
The sad thing is that all this debate over whether or not Kristen is a “stripper” is taking the attention away from the real issue: that Kristen was fired in a Gestapo-like fashion after questioning the hiring and firing policies of Gilroy High. Shouldn’t we be questioning that instead?
