Beginning Oct. 1, readers of the Gilroy Dispatch website will ask readers to sign up for an “online subscription,” which requires logging in with an email address to read a full story.
To access the free and secure online subscription, follow the prompts after clicking on any story after the first of the month. The process is as simple as entering a valid email address along with your zip code, screen name and password, according to Chuck Gibbs, IT director for Mainstreet Media Group, the company that publishes the Dispatch.
As traffic continues to increase on the Dispatch website, the company has expressed interest in learning more about its readers.
“Thank you for continuing to subscribe to your local newspaper. We are proud to have served the community for more than 100 years and we will continue to provide local news that matters to you and your family for many years to come,” wrote Anthony Allegretti, publisher and CEO of Mainstreet Media Group, in a letter to Dispatch subscribers.
The Morgan Hill Times, the Dispatch’s sister paper, began requiring email addresses for online subscriptions earlier this year, Gibbs said.
In the future, a “nominal fee” may be required to access certain parts of the Dispatch website. But for now, readers can continue to enjoy full access to all news the Dispatch publishes on its site.
