CHEERS: For the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Trustees
which has demonstrated a keen commitment to keeping the public
informed at every step since the beginning of the search for a new
superintendent of Gilroy schools.
The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Trustees which has demonstrated a keen commitment to keeping the public informed at every step since the beginning of the search for a new superintendent of Gilroy schools. It’s so important for our community to have the opportunity to stay informed about the process and to get involved in the community outreach meetings that are forthcoming.
JEERS: For the skimpy supply of fuel for the efficient and wildly popular pellet stoves. Consumers are paying outrageous prices for the pellets – when they can get their hands on them. For some people, the pellet stove in their homes is the only source of heat. Hopefully, temperatures will warm and the supply crunch will end soon.
JEERS: For the uptick in girl-initiated gang violence at Brownell Middle School. Getting beat up at school by campus invaders presents an ugly and difficult situation. Principal Joe DiSalvo would like to have another School Resource Officer assigned from the Gilroy Police Department. Others think that’s overkill. Certainly it’s a legitimate topic – one of many – for the next joint City Council/School Board meeting.
CHEERS: For the shifting winds blowing through the staff at the Local Agency Formation Commission which is, all of a sudden, not so militant in its policy proposals. The bottom line is that LAFCO should not be the agency with the power to force ag mitigation policies.
JEERS: For Gilroy High School basketball coach Bud Ogden, suspended by the Central Coast Section and then again by Gilroy High School following two technical fouls, an ejection and a tense situation in which he had to be restrained in the Salinas game. His public apology is noted and appreciated. But officials are always going to blow calls, especially in high school games. What’s more important is knowing where the line is and teaching the young men you’re coaching what good sportsmanship means. Motivation doesn’t come from simply losing one’s temper.
CHEERS: For the Gilroy City Council, which has decided, after much consideration, that it’s time to simply law down the law with regards to seismic retrofitting for downtown buildings. It’s the right call. At some point, shared walls and disputes between neighbors become subordinate to the overall goal: safe buildings.
