Pacific Point Academy will host three weekly sports camps—all of which will be run by Gavilan coaches.
The camps are open to athletes in grades 5 through 12. Camps for those in grades 5 through 8 will run from 9 a.m. to noon, while the prep camps—grades 9 to 12—will go from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Football, basketball and soccer camps will be hosted in Week 1, July 27 to 31. Week 2 features soccer, baseball, softball, speed and agility and sand volleyball and runs Aug. 3 to 7. Week 3 will focus on football, basketball, baseball, softball and sand volleyball.
For baseball, coach Kyle Bennett—owner/operator of the Gavilan Hornets and pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Gavilan Rams—will be on hand to teach youngsters how to play ball. The camp will focus on offensive and defensive fundamentals, position-specific training and instruction for both batting and pitching through competitive drills.
Gavilan’s head women’s basketball coach and Pacific Point Athletic Director Erik Nelson will instruct the hoops camp. Players will develop perimeter and post footwork, shooting mechanics, proper passing and decision making and on-ball defense. They will also focus on off-ball movement, shooting off screens, rebounding, defensive rotations and leadership on the court.
Football will be led by coach KC Adams, who has spent the past three season as an assistant coach at Gavilan. Adams will help athletes improve their overall knowledge and I.Q. of the game and elevate their techniques. Camps will receive position-specific training and enhance their overall footwork in addition to doing offensive and defensive drills.
Christopher High head girls volleyball coach Brian Calimpong—with the help of some of his Cougar players—will lead the sand volleyball camp. Calimpong said the camp is designed to help new or less experienced athletes learned the basic skills or brush up on the ones they already have. Players will focus on developing their basic skills of passing, setting, hitting, serving and communicating on the court.
Rams head soccer coach Ricardo Espinosa will lead the soccer camp. It will cover all aspects of the game, with special emphasis on passing, shooting, dribbling and defense. Athletes will learn individual ball skills such as moves, turns, shielding the ball and dribbling. They will learn accurate and effective passing and will participate in 5-on-5 and 3-on-3 scrimmages to simulate a real game experience.
Nikki Dequin, head coach of Gavilan’s softball team, will lead the softball camp. Dequin is a Gavilan College and San Jose State University alumnus, who played the sport at both schools. She helped the Rams capture their first conference title in 30 years in 2014 and brings a wealth of experience that she will share with campers.
The speed and agility camp will be coached by EJ Harrel, who has successful coached track and field, cross country, football and basketball. The camp will focus on increasing strength and explosiveness, conditioning, balance, foot speed and quickness.
Each camp cost $100 per athlete per camp. Two camps cost $190, while three is $275.
