At 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, the California Highway Patrol misreported an that an adult male died from a car crash on U.S. 101 near Leavesley Road, later realizing that he didn’t die but endured serious head injuries.
By 2:30 p.m., the CHP retracted their statement about the fatality and said the man was suffering from serious injuries at a San Jose hospital.Â
A Nissan Pathfinder was on the northbound U.S. 101 ramp from Leavesley Road, and began to merge on the freeway when it spun out of control due to wet road conditions and slammed into a Chevy pick up truck traveling in the fast lane, according to CHP Officer Erica Elias.
The driver, 21-year-oldAngelica Palomares of San Martin, endured major injuries and was transported to a San Jose hospital. Her two male passengers, Ricardo Palomares, 78, and Eustolia Palomares, 77, both of San Martin, also were rushed to a San Jose hospital for major head injuries.  Ricardo was mispronounced dead on the scene by CHP officers. Later the CHP retracted the statement and as of 3 p.m. Thursday, all three occupants of the Nissan were still alive.Â
The occupants of the truck were unharmed, Elias said.Â
One lane of U.S. 101 remained open early Thursday afternoon, but traffic was very slow.Â
