DEAR EDITOR:

While Dennis Taylor in his column of April 23 makes some progress (for a self-declared liberal that is) in admitting his mistake of taking a cheap shot at South Valley Community Church and their recent “Got Purpose?” campaign, he still says things that are very disturbing to me (as a conservative), and therefore I think deserve a reply.

First Mr. Taylor, you are wrong in concluding that all “right-wing fundamentalists” stand on the same religious platform and all display what you liberals like to proclaim is a platform of bigotry, intolerance and ignorance. Using your own illustrations, a study of the theology of the “whackos” in Waco (i.e the Branch Davidians) reveals that they are neither Christian nor fundamental in their theology, and are rightfully classified as a cult, and yes, whacko from a sociological standpoint.

While it’s easy for a liberal to always associate a cult with the “right-wing,” history shows that cults have also been associated with the “left-wing” just as well.

The action of James Kopp, (the killer of the abortion doctor) reveals a murder committed by a mentally twisted individual who certainly was in no way motivated or controlled by the Christian admonition to love one’s enemies, and let government delve out appropriate punishment for evil doers.

Second, Mr. Taylor, for you – who as a liberal – is suppose to practice tolerance as well as preach it, you fail again with your own lack of tolerance by cheap-shooting Jerry Falwell. I hope you have written evidence to prove that Rev. Falwell has as you wrote “spewing disdain for all new immigrants that came to America after his family immigrated.”

In logic that is faulty generalization … something you seem to do quite well. And where have you been (on Mars?), when it comes to the issue of abortion? The Christian Coalition is preaching a message of personal responsibility that involves the protection of unborn human life. But then your ranting only shows again that as a liberal you really don’t believe that the innocent life of an unborn child is precious – rather you bow well to the radical feminist indoctrination expounded by their goddess Margaret Sanger, who was a racist pure and simple. Check out the facts of history Dennis, and be thankful your mother didn’t abort you.

Next you cheap-shot the Family Research Council, painting them to be some Gestapo-like organization, who are out to deny certain groups of people of their “civil rights.”

I think most conservatives would agree that there is plenty of evidence showing these same groups (with their own powerful and wealthy political lobbies) have successfully pushed their one-purpose agenda into the arena of civil rights when in fact it is “personal choice” that drives their lifestyle. Do a study of their techniques, methods and funding, and it will make the activity of the Family Research Council look like child’s play.

And finally, maybe you should be seeing a professional counselor, so that the worst-of-all boogie-man John Ashcroft won’t keep you “trapped and frightened.” Please Dennis, stop the drama and stop using the age-old liberal tactic of trying to void the human conscience with any kind of religious philosophy from affecting the way one should operate in life. Religion or a lack of it (aka humanism) is still an operating system in the human soul.

The atheist pushes his own non-religious philosophy in life just as much as the religious person does. This is known as a person’s “world view.”

Apparently you had no such worries when Bill Clinton (who certainly seems to have followed his own religion of lying and lust) pushed his own agenda above the Constitution on a consistent 8-year basis. The record is clear how Janet Reno’s Justice Department hindered investigations and helped give the Chinese important U.S. military secrets. But then, I guess you slept real good when she was in office, and had no reason to be as you said, “defensive.”
