Editor,

As a proud descendant of our Pilgrim Fathers, having eight recognized “Grandfathers” who sailed from England on the Mayflower, I would like to clarify a historical point made by Joseph P. Thompson, Esq., in his letter to the editor in the Tuesday, May 9 2006, newspaper.

Pilgrims and Puritans are two completely different entities. The Pilgrims, after leaving England, were headed for the Virginias and were blown off course. Thus, their arrival in Province Town at the end of Cape Cod in 1620, not Boston Harbor…. 10 years prior to the arrival of the Puritans in 1630. This eventually brought them to Plymouth Harbor, Mass., not Boston Harbor. And, much as we all love the idea of “landing on Plymouth Rock”, it is wonderfully symbolic, emphasizing finalization of the writing of the Mayflower Compact on 11 November 1620, which is our first Freedom document.
