DEAR EDITOR:
Many say there is not much going on downtown Gilroy. On Friday, March 12, at noon, in the heart of our downtown, anyone who happened to be between Fourth and Fifth streets enjoyed the 134th birthday party for the City of Gilroy. Cake was served by Mayor Al Pinheiro and members of the Council, along with “AshfordDawgs” Hot Dogs first annual Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The five hungry contestants were Burt Popowski from Heinzein Manufacturing, Bill Wenholz from ACS Co., Juan Sanchez from Cresco Rentals, and Esteban Arellano and German Ortiz from California Music. Arellano took the trophy home.
Our downtown has been in a state of revitalization for such a long time as business owners we are survivors. We need the people to support us by shopping downtown first. Gilroy is still a small town, though we now have the outlets and box stores. Our downtown merchants are customer service oriented and a number of us have been downtown for many, many years. We want to give you great service.
Gilroy is a great place to be. Look beyond the construction work messes and visit downtown Gilroy often. Good things are happening.
