Last week, Gilroy police made quite a few arrests for burglary and crimes related to drugs or alcohol, as well as a felon who was carrying a concealed shotgun, and a man who tried to steal porn. Here are a few incidents.
• On April 21 at 11 a.m., 30-year-old Gilroy resident Daniel Pacheco was arrested for stealing pornography from Apatzingan Meat Market near the train station on Monterey Street. After he allegedly ran from the market without paying for a copy of “Extremo,” an adult magazine, the store clerk called the police. Police caught Pacheco about a half-mile away from the market on the 7300 block of Forest Street, and arrested him for violation of county parole and petty theft. Gallacinao said that police could easily identify him from the description the store clerk gave of a man with horns tattooed on his forehead.
• Police responded to a 911 call reporting three people running from Martin Recycling at 6310 Chestnut Ave. on April 19 at 2:04 a.m. Police found one suspect, Gilroy resident Adam Guajardo, 21, in a field behind the business trying to hide in a creek bed.
In the trunk of Guajardo’s car, police found a 38-inch stolen computer monitor worth $2,000. Guajardo was arrested for burglary and taken to Santa Clara County Jail. Police believe other suspects were involved, Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said.
• Tony Lujan, a 22-year old Gilroy resident and convicted felon, was arrested for possession of a loaded “sawed off” shotgun on Tatum Avenue at Wren Avenue at 1:39 p.m. on April 20. Lujan was walking down Tatum Avenue when an officer recognized him from prior “professional encounters” and knew there was a warrant for his arrest, Gallacinao said.
The officer searched him and found ammunition in his pants pocket and the shotgun in his backpack, which had been sawed off so it could be easily concealed. Lujan was arrested for probation violation and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and was taken to Santa Clara County Jail.
• On April 20 at 10:28 p.m., Ismael Escobedo, 45-year-old Gilroy man, was arrested for being under the influence of a central nervous stimulant on Hanna Street near Fairview Drive and was taken to the GPD to sober up. Witnesses said that Escobedo was acting erratically, and police noticed on contact that he displayed obvious symptoms of being under the influence.
• Two people were arrested late in the evening of April 20 and early in the morning of April 21 during a DUI checkpoint on Monterey Street and Third Street. The arrestees were Cathleen Roman, a 54-year-old Gilroy woman who was driving a 2002 black BMW sedan, and Dennis Ramirez-Garcia, 26-year-old Morgan Hill man in a 1995 white Dodge sedan.
They were taken to the GPD and released the in the morning with court dates. The checkpoint also caught six people driving with suspended licenses and 24 more unlicensed drivers, Gallacinao said.
