Sheriff looks to curb under-age drinking

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office will be conducting sting operations targeting under-age drinking. The operations will be conducted randomly throughout the county and will continue through June. These operations are designed to reduce under-age drinking through various methods.

One such method is “Shoulder Taps.” A “Shoulder Tap” occurs when a minor (a person younger than 21) asks a member of the general public to purchase an alcoholic beverage. The act is completed when the adult agrees and provides the purchased alcoholic beverage to the minor.

The second enforcement method is the “Minor Decoy Purchase.” This method occurs when the decoy enters an establishment and attempts to purchase an alcoholic beverage from the clerk. This violation is completed when the clerk finalizes the transaction and provides the alcoholic beverage to the minor.

The penalty for selling an alcoholic beverage to a minor may result in the clerk and the establishments facing administrative action by the California Alcohol beverage Control Bureau. These actions can include but are not limited to a fine and suspension of their alcohol license. Also, if a citizen does purchase an alcoholic beverage for a minor they will receive a citation and possibly a fine up to $1,000 and 24 hours of community service.
